Tickets, ages, and the cutoff that matters
The Encounter’s posted hours run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, but 3:30 p.m. is the real deadline. That last-admission cutoff matters if you’re coming after school or late on a weekend afternoon. The nursery and garden center stay open later than the conservatory, so shopping later does not get you into the Encounter.
Admission is $8.95 per person. Kids three years old or younger are free, and a child who is four pays the regular ticket. That exact age line is useful for mixed-age family groups.
Group tours are a separate setup: the field trips and tours page lists guided visits Monday through Friday at 10 a.m., with a 15 paid-admission minimum and a recommended age of five and up. Group rates are handled by the operator, so call 407-365-6163, option 3, rather than multiplying the public ticket price.
Weather and butterfly timing
The operator describes peak butterfly activity as April through September, with the strongest movement on warm, sunny days. That does not mean the Encounter is closed the rest of the year, but cool or overcast weather can make the butterflies less active. Lukas Nursery also says it may close unexpectedly for inclement or severe weather, so don’t treat this as a guaranteed indoor plan during a storm. If weather is the deciding factor, check the planning and FAQ page or call before you drive over. Indoor options at Oviedo Mall.
Inside the Encounter and around the property
The paid conservatory is what makes this stop unusual. The operator lists a 4,000-square-foot year-round butterfly and bird space with finches, button quail, and the chance to feed butterflies from your fingertips. “Chance” is the important word: the nursery does not promise that a butterfly will land or feed during your visit.
The Encounter page also points to a nature-and-gift shop, but you can treat that as an optional add-on rather than part of the ticket. If you want plants, Lukas Nursery carries host and nectar plants for butterfly gardens, along with a much broader nursery inventory. Those are separate purchases from Encounter admission.
Getting there, access, pets, and what to ask
Lukas Nursery is at 1909 Slavia Road in Oviedo. The nursery’s trip FAQ says the property has paved walkways throughout. The same FAQ says there is no general site map currently available, so if your visit depends on a specific entrance, stroller route, restroom location, or seating, call ahead and ask staff directly instead of assuming the layout will work.
The nursery says leashed dogs are welcome in the nursery and garden center area if cleaned up after, but dogs are not permitted in the conservatory.
A longer Oviedo afternoon
The Encounter itself is a smaller stop, not a theme-park day. If your group wants more outdoor time afterward, plan it as a separate car leg rather than a walking route. You can use the Center Lake Park visit guide to decide whether to add a playground-and-splash-pad stop after the butterflies. For other choices, the things to do in Oviedo hub can help you build a local half-day around the Encounter. Keep the Lukas Nursery listing handy for address, phone, and contact details.
